“Risen”
Walk into the local grocery store and you will see chocolate bunnies, colorful plastic eggs, and marshmallow peeps everywhere. The common person knows Easter is around the corner. However, to us believers, we don’t think of the Easter bunny; our thoughts and focus is on our Savior Jesus Christ, the Risen One.
As Resurrection Sunday nears, the youth and young adults are dedicating their time and effort to prepare for their presentation, “Risen,” written by Lester Macanlalay. Adapted from Matthew 26-28, the play portrays the Last Supper, the garden of Gethsemane; Judas’ betrayal; Pilate’s feast; Jesus’ crucifixion; the empty tomb; Jesus’ resurrection, and the Great Commission.
As most play rehearsals begin, we started off with identifying characters, understanding the script, and stumbling through the lines. With a limited crew, several people play multiple characters. After several weeks of practice it was now time to add the props and music. Suddenly, words and motions turned into actualization.
To see Ralph Sampang (playing Jesus) up on the cross with his arms stretched wide and his head hanging low, it stirred up a mix of emotions. You’re sorrowful knowing what He endured for us, but at the same time joyful because we know He overcame the grave. The next scene begins with an instrumental background and with Jong Santos (playing Joseph) carrying Jesus’ body to the tomb. The joking and kidding stops, everyone else who’s not in the scene is silent and moved. It all becomes real. This is what our Lord did for us because He loved us. Take a moment and reflect; what have you done for the Lord today?
With the creative props and technical assistance provided by Bro. Freddie Norris and the oversight of Sis. Tina Santos and Sis. Gigi Gabor, everything is coming together. This live presentation, “Risen,” is coming to you on Sunday, April 12 at Filipino Christian Center.
